The Big Idea

When we are determined in our faith, and don’t get disheartened by the obstacles we face, Jesus will do great things.

Song at the end:

  • Our God is greater (chorus only – sing as a statement “God you are…”) – Chris Tomlin

  • Oceans – Hillsong
  • There is power in the name of Jesus – Noel Richards

Activity

Wrap up something very exciting in lots of layers – make it difficult to get into. Invite someone to open it to reach the treasure inside. They may need to ask for some help from a friend or two. This demonstrates their determination to reach the prize, and also that sometimes it’s necessary to have our friends to help keep us on track

Readings

Mark 2:1-12

Talk

A full talk is available, covering the following three points:

  1. The crowd saw something extraordinary, but they doubted Jesus.
  2. The men who came through the roof were determined in their faith, no matter the barrier.
  3. When things get hard and our faith wobbles, we need to rely on our Christian friends to help us see Jesus.
Response
  1. Create a space for prayer and offer prayers for physical or spiritual healing. Plan to have a couple of volunteers who are willing to pray with people in this space.
  2. Before the service, make a Lego house with a roof. Invite people to remove a brick from the roof and place it on the altar as a symbol of commitment to be determined in faith, OR as a symbolic removing of a barrier between them and Jesus.
  3. Offer a journal sheet (available to download) which people can reflect on and fill out. This may help them consider their own faith, doubts and any barriers that are in the way of them having a full relationship with Jesus.
  4. Freeze a collection of duplo blocks, or other large bricks in a bowl of water. In a tuff tray, provide plastic knives and spoons, pipettes, scoops and warm water. Invite anyone who wishes to come and help break out the bricks from the ice.
