The Big Idea

God calls us all to share the message and to do other things in his service (preaching, leading, hospitality, caring). We all hear different messages about who we are and what we can do, voices from the world, ourselves and God. Which voice will we listen to when God calls us to step out in faith for him?

Music

Songs at the start:

  • Holy Forever (Chris Tomlin)
  • Be Still and Know that I am God (Margaret Evans – use 2 verses, ‘Be still and know…’ and ‘In Thee o Lord I put my trust…’

Song in the middle:

  • The Rock (Nick and Becky Drake)

Song at the end:

  • My Lighthouse (Rend kids)
  • The Lord’s my shepherd (Stuart Townsend)

Other songs you could consider:

  • Will you come and follow me? (John L. Bell)
  • How great is our God (Chris Tomlin)
  • Hear the call of the kingdom (Stuart Townsend)
  • I the Lord of sea and sky – Here I am Lord (Dan Schutte)
  • Greater (Mercy me – this could be played during the response)
Activity

We played a game of people bingo. We made four different bingo cards, each with four people to find (someone with blonde hair, someone who has been on a plane, someone with a train set…). Invite your congregation to move freely around the room, finding people that fit the categories on their card. The cards we used can be downloaded from in the resources section, but you can also make your own to fit your congregation if you need to.

We explained that although we all have different experiences, skills and ages, God has a plan and a purpose for each of us.

Readings

We used a video of Psalm 139 from kidswise as our call to worship. It’s available to buy via their website, but we suggest using the NIV or Message translation if you would prefer read it.

Jeremiah 1: 4-10 – we had a member of our congregation read this from the NIV version of the bible.

Talk

We explore how we have different voices trying to tell us who we are, what we should do, what we are good at or not good at. We can listen to the voices of the world around us, our family and friends, our internal voice or, we can listen to God’s voice. The voice that says ‘I have a plan and a purpose for your life and I will be alongside you to fulfil it.’

We consider the excuses we give for not listening to Gods call and what God’s response is: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.” We learn how God promises to be with us and to equip us for the task he asks us to do.

Prayers

For this service, we incorporated prayers of adoration into our opening worship, and prayers of confession into the response.

For the prayers of thanks and intercession we used Lego/Duplo bricks. First, give let everyone choose a brick. You could pass around a basket, or ask people to pick one up on the way in. Follow the following steps to pray:

  1. Count the bumps on top of the brick. Thank God for one thing for each dot.
  2. Turn the brick over and count the circles/holes underneath. Pray a please or intercession prayer for each hole.
  3. Swap your brick with someone next to you and pray for that person.
  4. Finally, join your brick to a small group of people’s bricks and pray for your church or local community.
Response
  1. Prayer corner – we set up our prayer corner and included posters with different verses of scripture talking about God’s calling and reminding us to not be afraid. These verses are included in the resources section. Small, take home versions are also available.
  2. Labyrinths for seeking God’s call – we offered different types of labyrinth for people to use as they considered God’s call on their life and how they will follow it. We had a large floor labyrinth for people to walk on and finger labyrinths that can be used in a seat or on a tabletop. As you trace/walk the path to the centre, let go of worries and doubts. Rest in the centre, surrendering to God. As you walk/trace the path back out, journey with God.
  3. Bin for prayers of confession – Following the talk where we discussed the excuses or barriers we put up to avoid following God’s call, we gave the opportunity to offer prayers of confession. We invited people to write their prayer on pieces of paper and to then scrunch it up and throw it into the bin. We reminded people that when we confess our sins, and give them to God, he takes them and ‘throws them away’ before offering us a fresh start.
  4. Use lego baseboards and pieces to create tactile labyrinths that can be used. Leave some base boards empty for people to create their own labyrinth. Some ideas can be seen in the photo gallery at the top of page.
