What’s Your Golden Thread?

Activity

For the activity, you are going to play a giant game of “Guess Who.”

Before the service, prepare two large boards (we used a box from a fridge which most local kitchen showrooms will be able to provide). If you want and have time, colour them red and blue. If not, simply write RED TEAM and BLUE TEAM at the top of each board.

Print out the images in the download file “activity board images.” You may want to print at A5 size, depending on the size of your box. Using blutack, attach each image to your box in rows.

Also print out the file “activity game cards” and stick one onto the back of each board. Keep this side hidden from your congregation.

During the service, split your congregation into red and blue teams. Each team needs someone to stand at the front with their board; this person is allowed to see the image on the back so they can answer the questions.

Invite people from each team to ask yes/no questions in order to work out which profession their team represents. Remove the cards eliminated by the questions. For example, if the question is “does our person wear a hat?” and the answer is “no,” all characters wearing hats should be removed from the board; if the answer is “yes,” all characters NOT wearing hats should be removed.

When there is only one character left, you may turn the board round to reveal the card and confirm the answer.

Readings

The reading is Ephesians 4:1, 4-7, 11-13 (NLT)

This reading is quite wordy, so we have included simple actions to go with certain words. These can be found in the download file “Reading” which also includes the words for the reading, with the action words highlighted. Demonstrate the actions before you start the reading and invite your congregation to join in as they hear the words.

Talk

The talk covers the following three points:

  1. We believe in one God, who made us, loves us and is in us. We are united in Christ.
  2. We are all given unique gifts and called by God to use them – our GOLDEN THREAD
  3. As we respond to God’s call, our gifts weave together, building up the church into a WOVEN TAPESTRY

A full talk is available to download.

Response
  1. Make plaited bracelets out of wool. For each you will need a strand of purple to represent God, green to represent the Church and gold to represent your calling. These can be taken away as a reminder of how your call doesn’t stand alone but weaves together to form something bigger.
  2. Print out a selection of finger labyrinths. One is available to download but other designs can be found online. These can be made tactile by tracing the lines with a glue gun ahead of the service. People may use the labyrinths to help as they search for God’s call.
  3. Set up a sensory labyrinth in a tuff tray or similar. Use a chalk marker to draw the outline and then put a dry filling (rice, lentils, pasta, sand, etc.) in the tray to cover the route. Children and their parents (and maybe other adults too!) can uncover and trace the route as they talk about how God has a job for us. If you have any peg dolls or similar, you could add them to the tray as well.
  4. Print out the “self portrait” download file and provide colouring resources. Ask people to draw their face in the oval, then fill out the three “I am…” statements. This is a celebration of our own uniqueness with a  statement about God’s love and purpose for us at the bottom of the page.
